Autism is a condition of mind in which a child finds it difficult to communicate and use language and abstract concepts properly. Medicinal drugs can help in the treatment for autism but one must take into consideration the following things while selecting autism drugs:

1. Weigh the pros and cons of the medication in advance: Although the main treatment for autism includes communication and behavioral therapies, but nowadays various psychotropic drugs are also used to treat certain symptoms such as depression, self-injury, irritability, aggression, tantrums and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, one should be very careful while selecting the medication because sometimes these drugs can have severe physical and psychological side effects.
   If the child is showing destructive behavior, then it can be taken as a green signal that the drug therapy is working for the child. Though risky, these dramatic changes are a clear sign of their benefits outweighing risk. But if no significant changes are visible, even after using the drug for long time, it’s not worth using that therapy.
2. Focus on one particular symptom at a time: When you begin with any treatment, try to go step by step addressing one symptom at a time. This will help you in analyzing the effect of the medicine in a better way. If there is no noticeable dramatic change because of a particular drug, there is no point in continuing it any further. Till now, there is no one-drug-solution for autism. Risperidone is the only drug which is approved by FDA, to be used for the treatment of autism. Other drugs like olanzapine (sold as Zyprexa), fluoxetine (sold as Prozac), and sertraline (sold as Zoloft) are also used but they have specific age limitations for safety, set by FDA.
3. Go for any kind of medication only under the supervision of the doctor: Drugs used for autism treatment can have harmful effects on the Central Nervous System and various other parts of the body. The dosage top be given also varies from person to person. Thus, it is always recommended to go for any drug only under medical supervision. Finding the right drug and the required dosage is very important for effective treatment and can be achieved by trial and error. It might be possible that you have to try many drugs before the right one if found. All this, should done by an experienced doctor only.
