Your child should be made to learn proper brushing and flossing. A majority of children like to brush their own teeth themselves, so allow them to go ahead with it. You have to make sure that you have got rid of plaque before that. Brushing should be done twice daily atleast till the age of six. Till this age, children need help with brushing as their motor controls do not get developed by then. When these are developed, use a stopwatch to count that your child is brushing atleast for 2 minutes.

Once this is done, check if the teeth have been cleaned properly or not. Appreciate the effort if the work has been done in a godd manner. If not, then clean the areas left, and tell him that they have missed that space.

When a proper routine gets set, you do not have to do a check every day. But it is advisable that you check after a specific period if any problem is developing or everything is fine. Visit a dentist regularly to discuss any tooth or any gums related problem. Your denstist will be more than willing to show the proper technique of brushing. And also the best advice can only be given by him.
