Liver Cancer – Symptoms and Treatments
Cancer in the liver is the life threatening disease that can be devastating for the person. The person suffering from the disease should get the medical treatment as soon
as possible. Symptoms of the liver cancer are the usual one like loss of appetite, loss of weight, weakness which makes it difficult to diagnose in the early stages. The other symptoms which are clear indication of the problem are pain in the abdomen, yellowing of the skin but these are only there when the liver cancer stage has advanced to another level. Medical care is must for the person in case of liver cancer.
Primary liver cancer cases in the US are the cases of the metastatic cancer rather than the liver cancer. Actually the liver cancer is there because it has been spread to liver through the other body part where the cancer originally originated. In this case the treatment is done of the body part where the cancer originated and in case this is not possible then efforts are made to maintain patient’s life through medical assistance and pain management.
Depending on the stage of the liver cancer in the patient different treatments can be adopted to solve the problem. These are surgery, radiofrequency ablation, radiation therapy, alcohol injection and liver transplant. In case of surgery the area which is infected by cancer is completely removed except in the surgical resection which is a different thing. This is for the people who are suffering from the cirrhosis of the liver. This treatment does not guarantee the eradication of cancer. It may appear in the other part of liver or in other areas in the time period of few years. Liver transplant is also another type of surgical treatment but is for the people in the early stages but the tumor size is large.
Other treatments mentioned above come under the category of drug- based treatment. In this type of treatment the cancer cells are killed using the different procedures. In alcohol injection, pure alcohol is injected in tumor which dries out the cancer cell and they eventually get killed. His is known to increase the liver cancer survival rate. In case of chemotherapy the anti-cancer drugs are introduces in the body either directly into the liver or systematically. Chemotherapy basically shrinks the size of tumor which can be treated more easily through other treatments afterwards.
