OCTOBER – The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
It is often noticed that women do not feel comfortable discussing issues related to breast and other private organs. They prefer being silent about their related problems.
This has led to an increase in the number of cases going undiagnosed and untreated, especially breast cancer cases. This is also due to lack of knowledge and awareness among the women. Thus, the need of the hour is to bring the women out of these shackles of bashfulness. For this purpose only, October is considered as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Breast cancer awareness is symbolized by a folded pink ribbon.
NBCAM has brought up a grand success in educating the women all over the world. Women are told about the benefits of early detection, treatment and diagnosis of the disease. Various non- profit organizations have come up with the objective to support women suffering from breast cancer, raising money for them and celebrating the success of those who have survived it. Companies have also joined hands to support the cause. They have contributed money to promote research in the field of breast cancer. The items related to awareness regarding this are labeled with pink ribbon.
The efforts of raising awareness are not limited to women only. The men also come in the ambit. There is a big myth among the people that men are not prone to breast cancer and thus, not much was done about the breast cancer in men. But, now, even men are considered and diagnosed for signs of breast cancer. Though October is designated as the breast cancer awareness month, but the drive for this cause is a year – round commitment.
Though a number of steps are being taken up sporadically by people all over the world, the success can be achieved only when we decide to take up a step for ourselves. Our body is a gift God has endowed us with and we have no right to harm it merely because of our shyness to face the problem. If we are not ready to do something for us and our body, nobody else in the world can help. Thus, there should be an urge in every individual to take care of the body first and then the rest of the world. Breast cancer is curable. The first step is diagnosis of the disease and we are the only one who can do it best. Thus, there is an urgent need of awareness and knowledge about it.
