Growth is a natural phenomenon which happens to every human being. We grow older and our little children grow into adults. They enter teenage and at the same time a
number of questions enter their minds. They become inquisitive about the changes in their body, their health, their environment and their society. They are growing into adults and their questions are also more or else adult in nature. Parents should be aware of all this and should be prepared to answer the questions whirling in their minds as they are the only ones whom the child can ask.
Some of the issues which every parent must discuss with their children are:
- Changes in the body: When children grow, their body also shows visible changes which are new to them.
Sometimes, they even feel shy in going outside and mingle around with the people due to this. You should talk to the children regarding these changes and make them understand that these things are normal and happen to everybody. At this stage, an open conversation between the two is very important else the children may become depressed. - Use of alcohols and drugs: When children are growing, they want to know about new things. Alcohols, cigarettes and drugs are few things which attract them the most. You should freely discuss with your child the harmful effects of these things on their body and their health.
- Counseling: It might be possible that at some point of time in their lives, they need someone to talk to and pour their heart out. If the child is not comfortable talking to you, take him to some counselor who can make him feel better. You should come out of the stereotypic notion that if someone goes for counseling then there is something wrong with him. A good counselor can guide you and your child best and make him come out of the stressed situation soon.
- Sexually transmitted diseases: Children are curious in knowing about sex and related issues, but they are unaware about the dangers involved. Parents should discuss about the risks involved with STDs and educate them with the required knowledge.
